City Summer 2020 Sets

Early images of the City summer 2020 LEGO® sets are starting to surface at online retailers around the world. This bit of news comes hot on the heels of the announcement of the Creator 3-in-1 kits hitting shelves at the same time. Interestingly, this City news brings with it the science sub-theme of the year. Consequently, it looks like a return to the deep sea for Minifigure explorers!

60260 – Air Show

Of this new assortment of City sets, this one appeals to me the least. As a kid, I think I would have loved the helicopters that actually fly. However, in my AFOL collector years, this just does not speak to me in any way.

60261 – Central Airport

This kit targets the much younger crowd. With a 4+ rating, I doubt if this airport makes the wish list of many AFOLs. However, developing KFOLs might enjoy the easier nature of this build.

60262 – Passenger Airplane

After 60261, many were probably wondering where is the grown up version? Fear not, we get that in 60262, the Passenger Plane. While the main build is the airplane, there is also a small terminal included in the kit. This is a fun looking set that certainly makes my wish list. The plane features both passenger seating as well as a cargo hold. Interestingly, this set introduces us to a new City character, Poppy Starr. As her name suggests, she appears to be a blue-haired pop star.

60263 – Mini Submarine

And finally, the deep sea exploration sets! The first is a little build. However, it will be the cheapest way for LEGO® fans to acquire the new hammerhead shark figurine. Incidentally, these deep sea exploration sets feature an affiliation with National Geographic. The details of the partnership will no doubt see the light soon.

60264 – Marine Research Submarine

While this set does not appear to contain any sharks, it does have the first LEGO® angler fish. Look closely at the rocky outcrop to catch a glimpse. This kit is reminiscent of the Aquanauts and LEGO® System submarines from my childhood.

60265 – Ocean Exploration Base

While designed for the deep sea, this kit takes a page from the Lunar Space Station book. The pictures suggest it employs a similar shape and modular design. I like the look of this set quite a bit. Additionally, it appeals to me because it also comes with a hammerhead as well as a new ray.

60266 – Marine Research Vessel

If forced to pick just one of these new City sets to acquire this summer, the Marine Research Vessel would be it. The boat looks neat. However, most importantly, it comes with a huge great white shark! I am really bummed that I missed out on the earlier variant of this shark from the Pirates theme. It came out towards the end of my dark age. This one has a slightly different look, but I am really excited to get my hands on it!

My top pick here is definitely the Marine Research Vessel, however, the Passenger Plane and one of the hammerhead shark sets also make my list. What are your thoughts on the upcoming City sets? Leave a comment below or let me know on social media.

Until next time,

-Tom
