It is Minifigure Monday! This is a weekly column in which we celebrate amazing LEGO® characters through art. For several weeks now, I have been sharing my first Fantasy Minifigure Series. I have drawn each of these characters, taking inspiration from my favorite music industry entertainers. I have already shared Build On, #FreeBRICKney, Brick It Up, Hollabrick Girl, S.N.O.T. Criminal, Heart of Brick, and Kid Brick. This week’s entry into the Fantasy Minifigure Series is Jagged Little Brick.
Inspiration for this piece came from Canadian born Alanis Morissette. Her music featured prominently in my teenage years. Additionally, I have continued to enjoy many of her songs since. It goes without saying that I had to include a Canadian artist in this series. The look I went for originally appeared in the music video for Ironic. Given that four versions of Alanis sit in a car pretty much the whole video, I picked one that showed up later in her career as well. She wore a similar look once on the Late Late Show with James Corden in 2015, and again in the music video for The Reasons I Drink in 2020.
Jagged Little Brick was inspired by a look Alanis wore in the Ironic music video.

This picture started out as a pencil drawing in my sketchbook. Unlike others, there was only one sketch. Often, I roughly doodle out a number of poses before settling on one. In this case, I liked the first one enough to just start fine tuning it. You do not really see much of Alanis’ lower half in the video, so I took some creative license there. That is also why the colors vary between my sketch and the final digital version. I went with the coffee cup and snowscape because in the first five seconds of the Ironic video, Alanis walks to her car holding coffee in a snowy landscape. I thought it fitting to add the Canadian maple leaf.

While Alanis has a long catalog of songs I have enjoyed over the years, Jagged Little Pill remains my favorite album from her. For that reason, and because the look I drew came from one of the album’s singles, I opted to title my drawing Jagged Little Brick to give it a LEGO®-related twist. Interestingly, this is the second time I’ve featured Alanis in one of my LEGO® art projects. A few years ago, I re-created the cover for Jagged Little Pill using a Minifigure. What do you think? Who would be in your Fantasy Minifigure Series? Please comment below or reach out on social media.
Until next time,
-Tom
