Minifigure Monday is a celebration of the LEGO® Minifigure. Last week, I began my Brickstock fantasy Minifigures series. I enjoy drawing Minifigures when I have a free moment. Consequently, many custom character illustrations have piled up on my computer and in my sketchbook. I have not published these in the past because they were not official Minifigures. However, I noticed recently that several of them feature musicians or singers. As such, I decided to publish them now as my wish list for a collectible Minifigures series. Last week, I showcased Build On, inspired by Steven Tyler. This week, it is time for Fantasy Minifigure Series – #FreeBRICKney.
The #FreeBritney movement has featured prominently in entertainment news for the last few months. I am sure you are aware that it casts light on the questionable conservatorship of Britney Spears. The name for my Minifigure makes a play on the hashtag. However, the idea for this drawing is much older. Britney Spears, from her “Oops… I Did It Again” era, inspired this picture. I admit that I had a HUGE schoolboy crush on her when that video came out. It was about the time I turned 18. The idea for this drawing arose from that song title and a trip to the LEGO® Store. I had planned to “only look”. I ended up spending over $100. Oops… I did it again.

The LEGO® Store employee Minifigure also gave some inspiration. You used to see him holding a LEGO® Store bag in ads. I thought it fun to include a similar pose here with my Minifigure drawing since a shopping trip inspired her. Incidentally, #FreeBRICKney was a later addition to the piece. Everyone should be free to spend their money on LEGO® bricks 😉. Plus, after telling her detractors to “step on LEGOs” in a July 2021 Instagram post, Britney deserves her own Minifigure… even if the plural of LEGO® is LEGO®. Who makes your fantasy Minifigure series? Tune in next week to find out the addition to mine.
Until next time,
-Tom
