The new LEGO® City space sets came out earlier this year, but I refrained from buying any. It was not for a lack of interest. I love the science themed City sets. Additionally, I love the look of several of the 2024 space offerings. However, I have a lot of unbuilt LEGO® sets and a lot of sorting to get through. For the most part, I’ve only bought sets this year when the deals are good. And this weekend, the deal was great. As I reported a few days ago, there are some space themed GWPs available. To make things sweeter, one of the City space sets I wanted was on the damaged box discount table. It qualified me for all three GWPs, meaning the two polybags and the Alien Space Diner. As a result, my May 2024 LEGO® haul happened.

I’ve been toying with the idea of buying the large Technic Mars Rover Perseverance set, but remain on the fence. I don’t usually collect Technic. For that reason, it’s fun to get the small polybag version for free. As for the Space Hoverbike, more Minifigure astronauts are always welcome. However, my favourite GWP from the lot is the Alien Space Diner. While I did not collect classic space sets as a kid, I still appreciate the Minifigures. In fact, I feel like the classic spacemen were sorely missing from Minifigures Series 26. Even though these are not new colours, they almost make up for that sorry omission.

I also received two space themed stickers (shown above) and a Minifigure size trophy accessory for taking part in a hunt. The store had characters from Minifigures Series 26 hidden in the displays. If you found them all, you got the stickers and the trophy. It was an amusing experience and a clever way to get people to really examine the sets in the display cases. I noticed details about sets I never knew existed. For example, the nod in Ninjago City Markets to the 2021 LEGO® employee Christmas gift, the Temple of Celebrations. It’s not enough to make me want to buy the Markets set… but I like it a little more now.

The BAM station also featured some new elements. Going amazingly with the space theme of my May 2024 LEGO® haul, they are all astronauts! You get some neat spacesuits and a new alien species. These characters will look great in the new Space Base and Rocket Launch Pad set that I acquired in order to qualify for my GWPs. This is probably my favourite set from the 2024 City space lineup. As a space base, it looks amazing. However, I think it will also look good as a ranger outpost in the LEGO® Jurassic Park I am thinking of building. I liked the idea of the observation tower in the Giganotosaurus and Therizinosaurus Attack set, but it was poorly executed. With minor modifications, this space base could fit the bill.

I’m currently building one of the larger sets I bought last year, so I don’t know when I’ll get around to building my new Space Base. But I am really happy with the discount and all the freebies I got. Will I buy others from this City space series? Maybe. I am still thinking about the Space Science Lab and Modular Space Station. Did you buy anything to get this round of GWPs? Let me know in the comments or reach out on social media.
Until next time,
-Tom

80’s Space was (and still is) my all time favourite theme since I was a little kid, so I’m loving this revival 😁
Hope you are well!
Warm regards, John K

Hi Tom,
Sounds like you really maximized the value with your May haul! I usually refuse to purchase LEGO at MSRP, but when I saw early Insider access for the The Milky Way Galaxy #31212, I caved; I was able to net around 7% cash back, the Insiders points of course, and I received the Alien Diner GWP – I intend to sell this to recoup additional funds if possible.
Thank you for the content,
Ben
Hey Ben! Great choice, I saw the Milky Way in store and it’s beautiful. I’ve been thinking about selling some of my past GWPs to recoup costs too… Still on the fence though. I’ll definitely sell my May the 4th Star Wars stuff though.
