It occurred to me recently that I made a disproportionate number of male characters for my custom LEGO® world. So far, I only have one female Raven Master. I always fully intended to customize female characters as well, but I have been stuck on one in particular. I am struggling to finalize a queen character to rule alongside King Torben. In my struggle to create a queen, I have not progressed on any other women characters. So, I set the queen aside for now and I created my first Viking Shield Maiden.

Diagram showing the elements used to make my Viking Shield Maiden.

I loved Tasha the Witch Queen from the Dungeons and Dragons Minifigures Series. While her hat/hairpiece is fun, it does not really suit my Viking world. However, her legs and torso are another story. Tasha was so wonderfully detailed that I could not resist repurposing her for my builds. In fact, I bought several copies of the Witch Queen in order to make several similarly clad Viking Shield Maidens. I don’t know what role they will play in my story yet, but they will be a clan or band of some sort.

Viking Shield Maiden

This band of shield maidens has a uniform and matching shields.

Since I intend to make these shield maidens a group, I figured I would armour them all with the same shield. That way, they will have matching uniforms and shield colours. The shield comes from the LEGO® Ideas Viking Village set. However, as I write this, you can buy the element from the Pick-a-Brick bestseller list. So, I ordered a few more from there as well. The spear is the flat silver colour variant that comes in about 170 different sets… I won’t list them all here. Chances are you have that piece.

I used the painted face from the Ninjago Harumi Minifigure. I love the red across the eyes. The head is also double-sided with one face being simply stern, and the other in a sort of battle cry. Two different versions of Harumi had this head piece. One was dressed like the Bride from Kill Bill and came in the Gamer’s Market set (71708). The other came dressed in black and was found in two sets, Throne Room Showdown (70651) and Oni Titan (70658).

Let the storm rage on…

This particular band of Viking Shield Maidens will probably all use the same body parts. I will make them individuals by changing up the hair elements. For my first one, I used the hairpiece that came with Elsa in Disney Minifigures Series 2.

Viking Shield Maiden

I will make many other different women characters for my Viking world. But I really loved Tasha the Witch Queen’s attire, so I want to use it well on several badass women characters. I’ll share them all over time. What do you think of my first Viking Shield Maiden? Let me know in the comments or reach out on social media.

Until next time,

-Tom

  1. The Witch Queen hair might come in handy if you do make Valkyries.

  2. Yes, definitely need a band of shield maidens! These are great, Valkyries next maybe?

    1. I’m thinking my shield maidens will get their own longboat too… Valkyries could be fun to make 🤔

I like what you are doing along this theme.
    It is working out well.
