I was out early in the morning recently while taking my dog out on a bathroom run. The sun was rising and the grass was covered in dew. The low angle of the light hitting my lawn made the dew drops glisten beautifully. I decided to try and capture a sparkling drop with my camera. In the process, I quickly stumbled upon an interesting photo effect. The dew drops that were not in focus created wonderful glowing orbs in the background. This effect is often known as bokeh bubbles and can be added as a filter when editing photos. However, in this case it is completely natural. The sight inspired me to run in and find a fantasy Minifigure. The first one I stumbled upon was the Elf Maiden.

The Elf Maiden hails from Minifigures Series 17. She came out in 2017. Interestingly, she was the subject of one of my Minifigure Monday posts back then as well. She has inspired me to get creative on more than one occasion. In 2017, it was a poem. Now, it is photography. She has been the subject of an unpublished drawing of mine as well. I’ve always felt there is something sad about her… a loneliness.
The Elf Maiden has inspired more than one of my creative projects.

I don’t read about photography, nor do I watch tips and tricks videos on the topic. I just try to capture interesting moments where I can. This particular experience worked well on a Minifigure scale, so I thought I’d share it. It was pretty simple to do as well, provided you get up early enough on a particularly dew-blanketed morning. I simply used my phone camera and focused on the Minifigure with the sun shining through the dew drops behind her. I think it added a magical quality to the photos.

What Minifigure do you think would lend itself well to this photography technique? Let me know in the comments or reach out on social media.
Until next time,
-Tom

The Orc from Minifigures 24 without the cape or shield.
“I’ve always felt there is something sad about her… a loneliness.”
I can get that feeling too; when I look at the second image down from the top.
I like this new photography technique. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome photos!! And story – envisioning a mad dash to the house to dig through a shoebox full of minifigures, racing back outside with the camera …as the dog and wife look on bewildered 😂
Oh, the dog and wife are used to it by now, no one bats an eye😂
Very effective! Shows how inspiration can strike at any time.
That’s why I almost never leave home without a Minifigure 😂
