I recently reviewed the LEGO® Harry Potter Triwizard Tournament: The Arrival set. I bought it because I wanted the parts included, as well as the instructions on how to build the hull. The basic hull structure is the template for my custom Viking cargo ship project. While building the set, I was pleasantly surprised by the Viktor Krum Minifigure. So much so that I decided to give him a little customization attention as well. He is going to be the Viking merchant captain of the ship I’m building. I thought I’d share what I created in case anyone else out there is looking to build some Viking characters.

My custom Viking Merchant minifigure.
The elements I used for my Viking Merchant minifig came from the City, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Monkie Kid themes.

The Body and Fur Collar

The brunt of this Minifigure comes from Viktor Krum. This design for the character is only available in the Triwizard Tournament: The Arrival set (76440). The minifig is relatively rare, so he averages around $25 CAD on Bricklink as I write this. However, I found the torso on Pick-A-Brick for $1.46 CAD (Mini Upper Part, No. 7137). Since I want the standard yellow Minifigures on my custom LEGO® Viking ship, I swapped out his hands and head from my Viktor Krum.

I used the torso, legs, and fur collar from the Viktor Krum minifigure to make my Viking Merchant.

The Hair

I reviewed a bunch of Monkie Kid sets back in 2021. At the time, I remember commenting in my review of the White Dragon Horse Jet that the Spider Huntsman’s hair and collar reminded me of Ragnar Lothbrok from the Vikings TV series. Since Viktor came with an appropriately coloured fur collar, I did not switch it out for the Huntsman’s. However, I did take the Huntsman’s hairpiece for my custom character. Thus far, this piece appears on four different Minifigures across 12 sets in dark blueish grey, black, and purple. Most of them are Monkie Kid sets, but the element also appeared in purple on the Harpy from Minifigures Series 25. You can find it on Bricklink for about $3 CAD (the grey one), or in the following sets:

  • 71045 – Minifigures Series 25
  • 80020 – White Dragon Horse Jet
  • 80021 – Monkie Kid’s Lion Guardian
  • 80023 – Monkie Kid’s Team Dronecopter
  • 80025 – Sandy’s Power Loader Mech
  • 80040 – Monkie Kid’s Combi Mech
  • 80041 – Mei’s Dragon Jet
  • 80043 – Yellow Tusk Elephant
  • 80045 – Monkey King Ultra Mech
  • 80046 – Monkie Kid’s Cloud Airship
  • 80047 – Mei’s Guardian Dragon
  • 80048 – The Mighty Azure Lion

The Head

The head is a common element seen in almost 50 different sets to date. I think it first appeared in the 2015 Pirates lineup. However, my first encounter with it was the 2016 City Volcano sets. I like it as a Viking face because of his rugged stubble and the smudge on his cheek. The cocky smirk works great for a self-assured Viking ship captain too. If you’ve collected City Volcano or Jungle sets, you probably have a few of these lying around. It is also common in City fireman sets, and appeared in the Ray the Castaway GWP. I won’t list all the sets it comes in here, but you can find it new on Bricklink for about $0.70 CAD if you don’t already have one.

The face for my Viking Merchant is fairly common in the City theme. Here you see it from the 2017 LEGO® Jungle Halftrack Mission set (60159).

The Shield

The shield is a fairly common element. According to Bricklink, it is currently available in six different colours and has been in 36 different sets since 2014. I used the metallic silver variant, which is presently the most common (in 27 sets). I own 10 sets that include this element, so I can’t be sure which one I repurposed it from. The shield averages around $0.55 CAD on Bricklink if you don’t already have one. As of 2024, here’s the list of sets that come with the silver version of this piece:

  • 10242 – MINI Cooper
  • 10243 – Parisian Restaurant
  • 10251 – Brick Bank
  • 10252 – Volkswagen Beetle
  • 10262 – Aston Martin D85
  • 10279 – Volkswagen T2 Camper
  • 10290 – Pickup Truck
  • 10305 – Lion Knights Castle
  • 10332 – Medieval Town Square
  • 10404 – Ocean’s Bottom
  • 10761 – The Great Home Escape
  • 21319 – FRIENDS: Central Perk
  • 21348 – Dungeons and Dragons
  • 40728 – Brite Bomber
  • 60368 – Arctic Explorer Ship
  • 70229 – Lion Tribe Pack
  • 70231 – Crocodile Tribe Pack
  • 71721 – Skull Sorcerer’s Dragon
  • 71785 – Jay’s Titan Mech
  • 75181 – Y-Wing Starfighter
  • 75969 – Hogwarts Astronomy Tower
  • 76070 – Wonder Woman Vs Doomsday
  • 76208 – The Goat Boat
  • 77905 – Task Master’s Ambush
  • 910001 – Castle in the Forest
  • 910029 – Mountain Fortress

The Axe

The axe was one of four that came with the Rivendell set. Presently, that is the only set that includes this axe. However, the set might be out of the price range of many AFOLs. Thankfully, the axe alone is not that pricey on Bricklink. As I write this, the average price for one is just under $4 CAD.

I used Gimli's axe from Lord of the Rings for my Viking Merchant.

If you are interested in building this Viking Merchant yourself, I tested it out on Bricklink. The cheapest I could manage was $26.37 (in October 2024)… Of course, you have to add taxes and shipping to that. This character came to be with elements I already had in my LEGO® collection. I intend to use my existing parts selection to build more Vikings and fantastical characters in the near future. I encourage you to do the same! Get crazy with those Minifigure designs 🙂 .

Until next time,

-Tom

  1. Love the return of Minifigure Monday!!
Great job on the customizing! Excited to see the ship

    1. Yes, I thought it was time to get some more Minifig Monday posts going. Just waiting on pick-a-brick and Bricklink orders to finish the ship 😁

  2. That’s cool, it really works so thanks for sharing. I might have been tempted to use a shield from Viking Village though for the colour.

    1. Yes, that would be nice. I’ve ordered a few more of them from pick a brick, but they have not arrived yet. I might change it still.
