Ideas BTS Dynamite Set Revealed

Calling all K-Pop fans. The LEGO®️ Ideas BTS Dynamite (21339) set is on the way. After some waiting, we finally have official images and a description for the this latest fan creation. BTS Dynamite made it into the Second 2021 review results on February 22, 2022. It and the just-released A-Frame Cabin (21338) were the only projects selected from that round. Cut to a year later and we finally have both sets (nearly) available. At this point the release date is only listed as early March 2023. We’ll of course update you once we know the proper date. From the Official Press Release:

The new set embodies the band’s creative forms of expression and includes the vibrant donut shop, ice cream truck and record store. Each building is fully detachable from the set, allowing for individual play and display experiences. But the set wouldn’t be complete without the biggest South Korean boy band in the world – who are now also available in LEGO minifigure form for the first time. All seven minifigures of the band members – RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook – are ready to sing and dance in sync on the LEGO stages.

This set is a (very) modest recreation of the music video’s setting. K-pop is now a massive phenomenon outside of Korea so this set should hopefully see some broad appeal. Here we have the brainchild of friends Josh, 20 from Indiana, and Jacob, 21 from New York: “Combining their love of BTS and passion for LEGO®️ building, they worked together to bring the set to life.” If you look at their original fan submission and compare it to the official set, there’s surprisingly not much difference. Their submission was quite minimal and really won purely based on concept. I guess the designers didn’t feel the need to make too many changes. Or couldn’t? This set is head scratcher. From the Official Press Release:

“When we saw Josh and Jacob’s colourful design we knew it would be a hit and this was proved by how quickly they reached 10,000 views in the LEGO Ideas voting.  The BTS fans have already got behind the design and so it was important that we were as faithful to the original creation as possible.  The set highlights creativity, passion and most importantly, fun! We can’t wait to see the fans building and displaying it.”

Do you feel the music?

I am very unfamiliar with this band or their music. And while I’m not the target market, I am sure this will have some appeal for the band’s many followers. But will it attract anyone else? I’m skeptical. I’m quite surprised at how minimal this design is given the cost and subject. There’s not much to this and frankly, it’s pretty bland. I can’t imagine this being much of a temptation on AFOLs or casual purchasers. The real draws are the 7 minifigures which are a good value for this set. Unlike the cost-per-brick which is quite high for an Ideas set. Whatever the case may be, and more importantly, congrats to the fan designers Josh & Jacob for getting their set to market 👍

And that’s the latest LEGO®️ Ideas set friends. What are your thoughts? Is anyone out there a big K-pop fan? Are you interested in this set or more like it in the future? Let’s see if Michael Jackson’s Thriller can become a set – now that would be wild and fun. Drop a comment in all the usual places and let me know your thoughts. Thanks as always for reading and until next time, keep on brickin’. 🧱
