The Doctor Fantasy Minifigure

It is Minifigure Monday! The Star Trek Voyager series continues with our seventh entry. As you may recall, we are going through the characters in this series in the order they appeared in the show. The seventh character in the pilot episode was the Doctor. Consequently, the Doctor is the fantasy Minifigure of the week. He appears after the Caretaker pulls Voyager into the Delta Quadrant. The ship’s original doctor dies in the transport. With no other doctor on board, the trusty EMH (Emergency Medical Hologram) remains active for the duration of Voyager’s journey. He develops his humanity as he goes.

Before beginning to draw, I knew which hairpiece to use for the Doctor. We saw this balding piece in the LEGO® Batman movie theme on the Alfred character. Since then, it has domed the top of many an elderly Minifigure head. Since Alfred inspired this character from the get go, I also drew this character in a stance similar to some of the Alfred art from the movie. The Doctor is one of the few characters that I drew with an accessory. In most cases, I was too lazy to add them to the pictures. I went through a lot of trial and error getting positions and facial expressions right. Consequently, I rarely had the patience to add accessories too. I probably should have drawn a medical tricorder or hypospray…

While the Doctor had many memorable lines in Voyager, I settled on his most common for this week’s quote…

in terms of action figures, Playmates produced one Doctor figurine in 1995. He was in the first wave of characters from the Star Trek Voyager collection. Along with the standard collectors’ card and display base, the Doctor also came with a hypospray, Personal Access Display Device, desktop monitor, and dermal scanning device. Interestingly, the collectors’ card calls him the Emergency Holographic Doctor instead of the Emergency Medical Hologram.

Robert Picardo portrayed The Doctor for all seven seasons of Star Trek Voyager. Additionally, Picardo played Richard P. Woolsey in another favorite series of mine, Stargate. I met Picardo at Comic Con in Toronto back in 2012. It was not the major Fan Expo event in the summer. Rather, it was the small convention that used to happen in March before the pandemic began. Picardo took the time to personalize the photo for me, but otherwise it was a pretty quick meet and greet. My brother-in-law attended the event with me and managed to snap a quick photo while I was up getting my photo signed.
