It is Minifigure Monday! This week, we take a look at my Tuvok Fantasy Minifigure. He was the second character to appear on Star Trek Voyager, thus earning the second slot in my Fantasy Minifigure Series. Tuvok was the chief of security on board the USS Voyager. However, his first appearance on the show is as a Maquis rebel. He was undercover on board Chakotay‘s ship while actually working for Starfleet. Tuvok marked the return of Vulcans to the forefront of Star Trek television. Not since Spock in the original series had a Vulcan served as a main character on the bridge.
While I am presenting these drawings in the order that characters appeared on the show, Tuvok was actually drawn before Chakotay. In fact, he was drawn before most of the other characters in this series. I had not decided on presentation order at the time. Additionally, my iPad was still new to me, as was drawing with an Apple Pencil. Consequently, I decided to go back to basics. Tuvok is in a simple, forward facing position. I drew him that way to try and get a hang of drawing and coloring in Vectornator. Back when True North Bricks was new and we offered Minifigure coloring pages, the early drawings were all done that way. Tuvok’s face, hair, and ears were all modeled after an existing elf Minifigure.
The face, hair, and ears were inspired by an existing LEGO® elf Minifigure.
In terms of action figures, Tuvok appeared once in the Voyager line. He came out in 1995 with the first wave of characters. Tuvok wears his official Starfleet uniform, and includes a phaser, tricorder, compression phaser rifle, SIMS beacon, and display base. Additionally, every character in the series came with a collector’s card. Like all other characters, Tuvok is also numbered for collocability.
Tim Russ portrayed Tuvok through all seven seasons of Star Trek Voyager. Similar to Robert Beltran, I met Tim Russ at the official Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas about 10 years ago. I met several Voyager cast members there. Sadly, the autograph session functioned like an assembly line conveyor belt… I was not really able to chat with Russ or get a personalized autograph. There was a lot of people there though. In order for everyone to get an autograph, I guess there was no other way to do it.
