The time has come for a new Fantasy Minifigure Series! For the next twelve weeks, I am sharing my Star Trek Voyager collection. I have been working on these drawings since January of this year. Incidentally, I have always been a Star Trek fan. Additionally, Voyager was my favorite of the shows growing up. Unfortunately, the LEGO® Group has yet to produce any Star Trek sets. Consequently, I am forced to dream of what the sets and minifigs would be like. However, LEGO® is not the only collection I have. Among the other things I have amassed over the years, I have some Star Trek paraphernalia. Throughout this Minifigure series, I will also share some items from that collection… namely, my action figures and autographs. We kick things off this week with a look at my Chakotay Fantasy Minifigure.

Obviously, this drawing was inspired by the look Chakotay sports for most of Voyager. I drew this on my iPad using Vectornator and my Apple Pencil. One of my goals this year was to really learn how to draw well on an iPad, so I kept it simple. To do so, I essentially copied the stance of a Superman Minifigure image I found on the internet. When learning new tools, I find it is easier to copy something than draw from scratch. That picture had the older Superman hair with the front curl. I changed the hair from that image to look more like the more recent representations of the Superman minifig. It doesn’t really match Chakotay’s hair from the show, but I couldn’t find and existing Minifigure hairpiece that I liked.

I have both Chakotay action figures in their original packaging.
Why start with Chakotay? To begin with, he is the first officer of the U.S.S. Voyager. Additionally, he is the first character to appear in the show’s pilot episode. As a small nod to Voyager history, I have decided to reveal the Minifigures in my series in the order that they first appeared on the show. Chakotay was a Maquis-rebel-turned-Starfleet Commander of Native American decent. Robert Beltran portrayed the character on screen. In the original Playmates line of action figures, Chakotay featured twice. First, he appeared in his Starfleet uniform in 1995. Subsequently, the second wave of figurines featured Chakotay dressed as a Maquis in 1996.

For my 30th birthday (many moons ago), I made a pilgrimage to Las Vegas. The goal of my journey was to attend the official Star Trek Convention. The event took place way before the pandemic, and had a full celebrity roster and packed venue. I had the chance to meet Robert Beltran and get his autograph for my collection there. Along with all my other autographs, I scrapbooked this one into my Star Trek album. The scrapbook started when my wife and I were dating and first moved in together. She didn’t want the framed autographs from my bachelor pad on the living room wall for some reason…

After having so much fun with the Brickstock Fantasy Minifigure Series, I am excited to share this second series with you all as well. I have eleven more characters coming up. So, be sure to check back next week for the second reveal. Do you know who the second character was to appear on Star Trek Voyager? Who was your favorite character? Let us know in the comments below or reach out on social media.
Until next time,
-Tom

That’s an awesome drawing! – I’d say you’re pretty talented. I’ve tried art on my surface studio but haven’t dedicated much time to it. Love the figure collection too. I’m guessing for next character it’s that woman with the short black hair and I think she has ridges on her nose. Belana or something? (I swear I didn’t google it lol.). She was with Chakotay on the rebel ship maybe Hmm.
Thanks so much! Not a bad guess… but you’ll have to wait and see 😉 Keep at drawing, it took me a while to get used to digital work as well.
Doh – just realized I could have looked at list of characters from the photo you posted from fig :S
They are not in order 😉
