In summer 2019, the LEGO® Group announced a new theme of sets based on the hit Minions movie franchise. The first wave was due in April 2020, just ahead of the proposed release of The Rise of Gru, the latest movie in the series. However, the COVID-19 pandemic came along, and the Rise of Gru release date hit the backburner. Along with it went the release date for most of the LEGO® Minions sets. Of the five sets originally slated for 2020, only two made it to store shelves. The rest finally saw the light of day a year after their original slated release. Now, even though the movie is not due until 2022, we have word of another addition to the LEGO® theme. In fact, the LEGO® Group even sent True North Bricks an early release copy. Check out the Minions Kung Fu Training (40511) Accessory Pack!

- COST: $16.99 – $19.99 CAD (to be updated)
- BRICK COUNT: 54
- MINIFIGURES: 4 (2 minifigs + 2 minions)
- RELEASE DATE: July 1, 2021
- COST/BRICK: $0.31 – $0.37 (to be updated, but expensive either way)
- BRICK-TO-FIG: 14 bricks/fig (excellent character count for a set this size)
The LEGO® Group has yet to release the price for this set. However, accessory kits like this normally range between $16.99 and $19.99 in Canada. Licensed kits are generally closer $20 if themes like Harry Potter or Marvel Superheroes are any indication. Ultimately, that places the price of a set like this at $4 – $5 a character, which is on par with the collectible Minifigures series. Consequently, even though the cost-per-brick seems high, the set is not a terrible value.
Since this is an accessory pack, you do not get a whole lot to build. The only assembly in the set is a training dummy. The design is potentially useful if you have a MOC martial arts dojo or something in mind. Otherwise, the focus of the set is really the minifigs. You get Bob, Kevin, Gru, and an exclusive Belle Bottom.

I know next to nothing about the Minions franchise. However, I am sure these characters will appeal to fans. All the same, the kit would likely do better closer to the actual movie release, especially since the exclusive character is unique to a film no one has seen yet. How do you feel about the Minions Kung Fu Training (40511) accessory pack? Feel free to comment below or reach out on social media.
Until next time,
-Tom
