And just like that, I’m blasted back to ‘90s evenings in front of the tube TV, trying to beat a frustratingly difficult Disney video game inspired by Gargoyles. Who am I kidding? I’m trying to play the remastered version of that same game now on Nintendo Switch… and it remains every bit as impossibly difficult as the original I played on my Genesis as a kid. But I digress. The LEGO® Group has just released a new SEGA Genesis GWP, adding to the nostalgia (and annoyance) I already feel for my old SEGA.

From September 8–17, 2025, spending $170 CAD or more will earn you the LEGO® SEGA Genesis Controller GWP. Of course, I have no need for a non-functional version of the controller I grew up with… but the LEGO® Group has gotten really good at pulling on the heartstrings of AFOLs nostalgic for a taste of their youth. I just wish it was releasing a little later to better coincide with the Black Pearl. There’s a bit of overlap… but wait too long for a nostalgic GWP, and you run the risk of it being gone.

Interestingly, the back side of the SEGA Genesis GWP features a small Sonic the Hedgehog vignette. Having also played Sonic on my Genesis back in the day, I appreciate that little touch. Could this GWP have been better? Sure. A Sonic Minifigure on a stand would have made this one the chef’s kiss. But I like it all the same. I’m tempted… only I don’t really want anything right now except the Black Pearl.
