I recently did a bunch of LEGO® shopping online during the June 2025 double points event. Since my orders have now all shipped, I went online to check my points balance as well as to see if there are any new rewards worth picking up. I noticed something interesting in the process. The LEGO® Moon Car from Ideas popped up in the rewards centre as “coming soon”.

The Moon Car officially releases tomorrow (June 30, 2025). Which means you can order one tonight at midnight if you feel like staying up. This is an interesting way to release a LEGO® Ideas set. It is not available for direct purchase. You have to spend 2500 Insiders points, equivalent to $25 CAD. It seems like the type of set that will be popular, especially with space fans. I’m not a hardcore space fan, and even I am tempted. It’s a nice little design.

LEGO® Moon Car Specifics:

  • NAME: Moon Car
  • SET #: 40789
  • THEME: Ideas
  • COST: 2500 Insiders Points ($25 CAD)
  • BRICK COUNT: 211
  • COST/BRICK: $0.118 CAD (decent value)
  • MINIFIGURES: 2
  • BRICKS/FIG: 106 (very good minifig count)
  • RELEASE DATE: June 30, 2025

The set results from a contest held on the LEGO® Ideas platform a while back. Previously, such sets came as gifts-with-purchase (GWP) in store and online. In this case, you have to use points to get a redemption code. Subsequently, the offer ships with your next LEGO® purchase. As such you are essentially paying for the set with your hard earned Insiders points rather than getting it free with your qualifying purchase. You still don’t “pay” for it… but you are giving up more for it that you would with a regular GWP.

What do you think of the LEGO® Group’s release plan for this set? Will you spend your Insiders points to get one? I just might… But, it might be a popular redemption, especially if the LEGO® Group didn’t make a lot of them. Getting one might require working fast. Staying up until midnight isn’t often something I’m motivated to do…

Until next time,

-Tom
