Following my discovery of the Ninjago Dragonian Minifigures, I decided to start developing a band of red orcs to go with my green ones. While reviewing Lloyd’s Green Forest Dragon, from whence my first Dragonian came, I remembered an older character from Nexo Knights. Back in my first year of blogging, I reviewed a free polybag that came with a LEGO® purchase. The character was Ultimate Lavaria. Subsequently, I dug her out of my Minifigure bin and set about customizing her look a little. Thus, the Red Troll Queen was born.

Originally, I intended to use her as just another warrior. However, I decided to make my red trolls a different tribe from my green ones. While they will fight in the same army, they will have separate rulers. Since my green orcs have a male commander, my red orcs will be ruled by a woman. The hood and wings that came with Lavaria did not suit my story or the Red Troll Queen’s high status. So, I gave her a cape and headdress.

The Red Troll Queen headdress hails from the Monkie Kid theme.
The headdress is something of a crown for this queen. I took it from the Monkie Kid Spider Queen. That Minifigure comes in two different variants. One was available in three different sets, the other came in only one. However, all four used the same headdress. The sets with that elements were:
- 80021 – Monkie Kid’s Lion Guardian
- 80022 – Spider Queen’s Arachnoid Base
- 80023 – Monkie Kid’s Team Dronecopter
- 80014 – Sandy’s Speedboat

As for the cape, it is not an official LEGO® element. My trolls are supposed to be savage and wild. So, I wanted a cape that looked less manufactured than the standard LEGO® fare. I found Minifigure compatible capes on AliExpress that looked more like an animal pelt.
Animal pelts and bones give the Red Troll Queen a more savage look.

Once upon a time, I bought Cole’s Earth Dragon from the Ninjago theme. I never reviewed it here on the blog because I never actually built the set as it was intended. It was a parts purchase for me. The head of the dragon is part of a MOC project I occasionally tinker with. The set came with a pouch of bone weapons. I took the Red Troll Queen’s sword from there. Her tribe will be similarly armed.

In past posts, I’ve referred to my orc army. For clarity, my trolls refer to the same army. However, I am not going to use the term “orc” much anymore. While the word “orc” has roots older than J. R. R. Tolkien, it really was Tolkien who created the modern day orc. My builds are inspired by Fennoscandian mythology, which does not contain orcs per se. Trolls and goblins abound though.

I’ll share more about the red troll tribe in future posts. You might also note the Harry Potter theme thestral in some of the photos. I have a mythological origin for that too, but I want to research it a little more before I share too many details. What do you think? Let me know in the comments or reach out on social media.
Until next time,
-Tom
