As I write this, Series 27 has been out for a solid month. Truthfully, I debated buying this collection. When the series was announced, there were a couple of characters who made my wish list. However, most of the Minifigures did not interest me at all… and still don’t. In fact, I think Series 27 is one of the LEGO® Group’s weakest minifig offerings to date. With that said, I ended up buying an entire box simply because I could not find a choice character ANYWHERE. I’m sure you know which one, but more on that later… On the plus side, I can now offer you a Minifigures Series 27 review. So, here’s my subjective ranking of all the characters.

12. Cupid
Why does the LEGO® Group even make the stumpy, unmoving legs anymore? I am also not a fan of this character’s wings. They are a new element with an anti-stud on the underside. I am not sure why the LEGO® Group didn’t just make a smaller version of the Aarakocra Ranger’s wings… or just use those wings. As it stands, the anti-stud makes the wings stick too far off the Minifigure’s back. Additionally, they require another piece in order to stick to the minifig. The alternate face with the heart eyes is funny though. The head element may be useful for that reason.

11. Hamster Costume Fan
Sorry, another stumpy-legged character, and another fail in my book. The costume itself is cute with the hamster mask. But, I have no use for the short, unmoving legs. He comes with printed tiles, and I think they are supposed to be cucumber slices. Those might be useful somewhere?

10. Jetpack Racer
I am hard pressed to think of any use for this character in my builds. But, you never know where or when Minifigure parts might become useful in the future. I can see how space fans might like this character. However, he only earns a spot above Cupid and the Hamster kid because he has normal Minifigure legs.

09. Astronomer Kid
This character gains some points in my Minifigures Series 27 review for the new prosthetic arm element. I really like that the prosthesis is a separate element that you attach to a modified arm element. With that said, we need to see Minifigures with the right hand amputated as well. That way people can use the prosthesis on the limb of their choosing. Otherwise, this character is kind of boring and belongs in a City set, not a Minifigure series.

08. Plush Toy Collector
Here is another character that screams City set. Squishmallow collectors and people who like those furry onesies with animal ears on the hood might like this character. But, the “squishmallow” plush toys are not even unique to this character. You find similar offerings in the Friends line, thus you can order them easily on Bricklink.

07. Longboarder
Yet another character that belongs in a City set… The longboard might interest some. The character also has unique printing. Additionally, I wanted this Minifigure for the green hair. I have use for it in my collection of Brick Costume characters. But, I am not building a modern city, so I have little use for the character otherwise right now.

06. Cat Lover
You guessed it… another Minifigure that belongs in a City set. This Minifigure made my wish list solely because it comes with a new cat figurine. Additionally, the cat is the closest the LEGO® Group has ever come to making something resembling my cat. The ball of yarn is also a neat accessory, though I imagine it will pop up in other sets.

05. Pterdactyl Costume Fan
If I was building a LEGO® Jurassic Park, the dinosaur costume characters would be quite useful. I have collected them all with the idea that someday I might want to build my own Jurassic Park… it is the same reason I collect all the Jurassic World dinosaur figurines. But, that day is a long way off. I just don’t want to pay after-market prices for everything when that day comes. This Minifigure’s face is also fun and potentially useable in my current Viking themed MOCs.

04. Bogeyman
Primarily, I wanted the Bogeyman for his book. I like LEGO® books and I want a variety of them for a future library build. Also, while he is different from the previous Series 11 Yeti and Series 14 Bigfoot, the Bogeyman remains similar enough that they could all be displayed together as forest monsters of a sort.

03. Steampunk Inventor
I do not have a use for this character in my current builds, but he looks cool. He offers a unique style and theming not seen in current LEGO® sets. Additionally, his head element lends itself well to castle, medieval, and pirates builds. If you collect the Funwhole steampunk line but don’t like their take on the Minifigure, here’s a good one for you.

02. Pirate Quartermaster
Pirates? Sign me up. The Pirates theme is one that I sorely miss. If the LEGO® Group brought that back, I would probably collect them. We’ve seen a few pirates in past Minifigures Series, but they are always welcome in my books. I have several Pirate ships currently built, and Barracuda Bay remains on display in my LEGO® room. Pirate minifigures will always have a home there. Not to mention that this particular pirate comes with a new cockatoo figurine.

01. Wolfpack Beastmaster
This was the character I wanted most from Series 27… and it was the one that I was completely unable to find. Every box I scanned at several different retailers had already been pilfered by army builders. I feel nostalgic over the Wolfpack branding… but I was really after the wolf. As a LEGO® animal collector, I can’t just have one wolf, I need a pack. They will roam around my Viking settlement MOC. Additionally, the Minifigure parts and accessories of the Wolfpack Beastmaster are super helpful in my custom minifig designs for my Viking project. I particularly love the cape. And now I have three since I bought a whole box.

Closing Thoughts…
My conclusions after this Minifigures Series 27 review are the same as after the reveal. I hoped my opinion would change after actually seeing the characters in person, but it did not. The collection only included three Minifigures I wanted for the actual character they represent. A few others had an accessory I thought was interesting. But a third of them are general City theme fare. I want something a little more unique from a Minifigures Series. City characters are a dime a dozen. What do you think of Minifigures Series 27? Let me know in the comments or reach out on social media.
Until next time,
-Tom

I too had little interest in this series when it was announced. However, last time I was in my local Lego store I decided to spend some time scanning the boxes and came away with 3 Wolfpack Beastmasters and a Pirate Quartermaster! I didn’t even finish scanning all the boxes that were out. Very lucky on my part I know.
Lucky you! That’s awesome, I wish I’d had the same luck.
Excellent review,
I agree with your rankings.
The last two are the only ones that interest me.
I like both.
The Wolfpack Beastmaster may be the “Minifigure Of The Year”
Good luck trying to find it.
Cheers. Cobra
