I’ve been sitting on this news and contemplating the new LEGO® Batman set for a few days now. On one hand, I love the idea of a Batman: The Animated Series set. I grew up on that cartoon. Additionally, I love the Minifigures (though I don’t think there’s enough of them). However, it comes at almost $400 CAD. While I like the Art set style, I also only have so much wall space. But then an idea occurred to me, and suddenly the new LEGO® Batman set has me intrigued.

For a long time, I’ve been debating the Batcave Shadow Box. I love Tim Burton’s vision of Batman, and set looks great. Like the new LEGO® Batman set, it also has amazing Minifigures. Michelle Pfeiffer remains my favourite Catwoman. I’m holding back because the set is $520 CAD. I also read the build is a little boring… and I think that huge open bat signal space leaves something to be desired. You either display the set closed, or you have a massive, wide open, eyesore of a space with nothing in it. Then I saw the new Gotham City set and I had an idea.
I love the brick work used for the sky, it really captures the look of the series.

I am curious how Gotham City will look standing behind the Shadow Box. Consequently, I looked up the dimensions of both sets. The Shadow Box is 29 cm high while the mural is 41 cm high. However, I think that 41 cm includes the massive Batman title above the skyline. I can’t say for sure since I’ve never seen the actual set. But it seems likely. I made a little mockup of what the two sets might look like together. It is not horrible. Granted, the Shadow Box would block a lot of the skyline… but at least there would be something to look at through that huge bat shape.

I’m feeling a little less on the fence about the Batcave Shadow Box.
Of course, the you could also customize the Gotham City set, making it smaller so it fits better. Alternatively, you could download the instructions for free from LEGO.com and use your own pieces to make a MOC or mod. I am not sure I want to spend $910 CAD collectively for these sets. Taxes would bring it over $1000. Buying the Shadow Box and building a scene inspired by the new LEGO® Batman set might be the way to go for me. The only downside to that plan is I miss out on the Batman TAS minifigs… What do you think? Let me know in the comments or reach out on social media.
Until next time,
-Tom
