I am going to be completely honest here… I have never played Fortnite. In fact, I barely know what it is. Back when I was a high school teacher, my students seemed to really enjoy the video game. That is the extent of my knowledge on the matter. Consequently, when LEGO® Fortnite launched on December 7, 2023, I didn’t pay much attention. Fast forward a week and I return home to a large, brown box on my porch. My initial thought was that my wife ordered a Christmas present… except the shipping label read Denmark. I have not been a LEGO® community ambassador for some time now, so I thought it quite odd. But, then again, they did send me the 2023 Employee Christmas Gift after I left the LEGO® Ambassador Network. Naturally, I opened the box. Inside, I found a large black box labeled “LEGO® Fortnite”.
NOTE: The LEGO® Group and Epic Games sent me this promotional material. A special thank you to both parties for sponsoring this content.

Upon opening the large LEGO® Fortnite box, I found a number of goodies inside. Firstly, I got a new LEGO® Fortnite t-shirt. Awesome. I love graphic tees, especially LEGO® ones. Some of my old LEGO® t-shirts have seen better days too, so this one is quite welcome. Secondly, the box included a poster. Since I have never played the game, I don’t really get the poster. But, cool anyway. The poster tube was also printed with the LEGO® Fortnite logo, similar to the main box.

The LEGO® Fortnite box also came with a limited edition Llama build. This is a smaller version of the huge 234,623 brick Fortnite Supply Llamas that the LEGO® Group built and displayed in London, New York, Tokyo, and Sydney to celebrate when LEGO® Fortnite launched. You can easily build one of these on your own, but apparently only 625 of these smaller, sealed llamas were produced. Mine is number 82. Though I know little about Fortnite, it feels kind of special all the same to have one of these.
Check out Llama 82 of 625.

Finally, the LEGO® Fortnite box came with a rather substantial LEGO® set. Now, I know Fortnite fans might be getting excited. Let me crush your dreams outright… it is not a Fortnite set. At publication, I have not heard any credible rumours of a Fortnite theme. Instead, the set I received is from Dreamzzz. Specifically, the Nightmare Shark Ship. After making the video above, I went on the read the letter that came with the kit. It illuminates the connection between LEGO® Fortnite and this particular Dreamzzz set. Apparently, the Nightmare Shark Ship appears in LEGO® Fortnite. Interestingly, this is my first Dreamzzz set. I’ve decided not to collect Dreamzzz for budget reasons. However, the Minifigures and brick selection have piqued my interest. I’m particularly looking forward to the Nightmare King from this set.

Since I was included in this Creator Box event, I thought it only fair that I actually look up Fortnite. Perhaps you, like me, really have no clue what it is all about. The original game launched in 2017. According the Wikipedia, the game features an open world style of gameplay with a survival of the fittest sort of vibe. The story centres around a world in which 98% of humanity has mysteriously vanished. While most versions (including LEGO® Fortnite) are free to play, there is an in-game currency that you can use real-world money to buy. Most versions of the game involve playing online with others. However, you can play LEGO® Fortnite alone… which appeals to introverts like me.

LEGO® Fortnite features two gaming modes, Survival and Sandbox. The former is just what it sounds like. You’re in a strange world and you have to find resources to survive and overcome whatever the world throws at you. Conversely, Sandbox mode sounds much less stressful. It allows you to simply create the world around you. While I’m curious about survival mode, Sandbox mode appeals to me enough to actually try the game. LEGO® Fortnite is available on Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. As fate would have it, I just got a Nintendo Switch…

Will you try LEGO® Fortnite?
I was very pleasantly surprised that the LEGO® Group and Epic Games sent me this promo box. Not only has it introduced me to Fortnite, but also to LEGO® Dreamzzz. you can be sure I will share more of my experiences with each soon enough. What do you think of LEGO® Fortnite? Have you tried it already, or will you be trying it soon? Let me know in the comments or reach out on social media.
Until next time,
-Tom

Enjoy the freebies as long as you can!!
The Dreamzzz minifigures led me to get the nightmare ship (and the crocodile car) – pretty neat build. Looks menacing next to the destiny’s bounty
Awesome! I still have two versions of the Bounty built. I’ll have to put them all together!
