Hot on the heels of the Amazing Spider-Man announcement, here comes another addition to the LEGO® Art collection. Similar to Spider-Man, the new piece strays from the dots-style of the original Art sets. Instead, it favors more texture and relief. However, I am not sure how I feel about it… I saw the initial images and wondered if it was a joke quite honestly. However, the set appeared online at the official LEGO® website. So, I guess LEGO® Modern Art is actually a set joining the summer 2023 wave.

LEGO® Modern Art Specs:
- NAME: Modern Art
- SET #: 31210
- THEME: Art
- COST: $64.99 CAD
- BRICK COUNT: 805
- MINIFIGURES: None
- RELEASE DATE: August 1, 2023
- COST/BRICK: $0.08 (excellent value)

Interestingly, the LEGO® Group markets the set essentially as a Classic brick box for adults. The website copy reads “hobbies and crafts for adults”. It goes on to say “the accompanying building instructions are not there to tell you what to do, but rather to inspire you with aspirational images and suggestions for your artistic journey.” Apparently, said instructions include four different models. Additionally, you get more LEGO® elements than you would with the Large Creative Brick Box (790 bricks for $74.99 CAD) for a lower price. Some of parts are certainly interesting… but there are no 16×16 Technic bricks typically used in the original Art-theme sets.

This set is… different. The free build aspect, part selection, and price point are interesting. But, overall, the promotional material makes me think of a toddler’s first construction. I’m just not feeling it. I like the style and parts included with the original art kits. I also liked sets like Starry Night and The Great Wave that applied interesting techniques to recreate classic art works. Building those inspired me to try my own hand at different projects like my Jurassic Park logo and Pocahontas shadowbox. So far, the images of this set don’t inspire me to branch out on my own. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below or reach out on social media.
Until next time,
-Tom
