The LEGO® Group seems to be diversifying their art portfolio. Earlier this year, we saw Hokusai – The Great Wave depart from the standard flat Art kits we’ve grown used to. Now, the follow up once again employs some NPU (nice parts usage), creating depth and a little perspective. On August 1, the LEGO® Spider-Man art kit hits store shelves. It recreates a classic comic book look, making it appear as if Spider-Man is crawling right out of the frame.

As with all LEGO® Art sets, the Amazing Spider-Man also includes a soundtrack. While we have no details about it at this time, it will undoubtedly feature an expert discussion about the character and perhaps comic book art as well. The layering seen in the image above also intrigues me. Interestingly enough, so does the part selection. There are a number of flexible rods, including one type I have not seen before which appears to have Minifigure holding points. I’m not sure what I would use all those round green tiles for… but they intrigue me for some reason too.

I hope they continue to make the “classic” Art sets as well…
While part of me likes this new direction of dimensional art, I am still hoping to see the more classic style Art sets occasionally as well. I recently dove into the world of mosaics with my Jurassic Park logo MOC. The build was huge and I was able to afford making it because I acquired a lot of the original Art sets on liquidation. I have plans for another mosaic in the future. Art sets like this Spider-Man will make acquiring the necessary parts harder. Also, while I do like this set overall, some of the proportions and angles seem a little off due the limitations of the brick. The large shoulder and hands placement don’t quite work for me… Though, the hands are supposedly moveable.

In any case, it looks like the Amazing Spider-Man includes some interesting bricks and build techniques, even if those bricks are not all mosaic friendly. I might pick this up when it goes on sale. Until next time,
-Tom
