The LEGO® car sets are not always my thing. But every now and then, a set comes out that strikes a chord. I loved getting the Lamborghini Sian, for example. It looks like another chord has been struck today. The LEGO® Group just announced they will release the Classic Land Rover Defender 90 as part of the 2023 Icons lineup. The move celebrates the 75th anniversary of Land Rover. Why does this interest me? Well, back in my Dark Ages, I spent a year working in Africa conducting wildlife research. I drove this very car and have many fond memories in it. Of course, the Landy I drove was white… but I digress.

From the official press release:
…the LEGO® Icons Classic Land Rover Defender 90 set, featuring the iconic Land Rover green colour scheme. Faithfully replicating the classic Defender, the two-in-one format means brick and car fanatics alike can choose to build and display the everyday road-ready model before activating adventure mode and customising the build with accessories including the roof rack, engine snorkel, offroad front bumper and working winch, side rails, toolbox, a fire extinguisher, and traction plates for crossing mud and sand, and much more. The Defender has racked up 75 years of all-terrain expeditions. Instantly recognisable around the world, it has a unique record of adventure, humanitarian and hard work.
The LEGO® Group

To celebrate this new set, the LEGO® Group also made a film of some sort. At the time of publication, they are being tight-lipped on when and where the film will air. They are also keeping mum on details like how long the video is. However, I can tell you that at some point in the near future, we will see two renowned adventurers competing to reach the most remote LEGO® Store in the world (a yellow Land Rover doubling as a LEGO® Store) in the Scottish Highlands. Once there, they’ll have to race to build the set. The adventurers in question are Raha Moharrak (the first Saudi woman to climb the Seven Summits) and Aldo Kane (Scottish adventurer and extreme locations expert). Keep an eye out, I guess.

I’m looking forward to Land Rover Defender. I spent many days and nights with this car in the South African bushveldt. I am sure the build will be nostalgic for me. Though, I might have to try and rebuild it in white… We’ll see. What do you think? Does the latest addition to the Icons line make your wish list? Let me know in the comments or reach out on social media.
Until next time,
-Tom
