Wait, what?!? Star Wars Mechs?

You read correctly. The latest Minifigure-mech sets are not Marvel, they are not DC Comics… they are Star Wars mechs. Three in total join the summer 2023 lineup, featuring Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and a Stormtrooper. Of course, we all remember the time Darth Vader suited up to lead his battalion of mech-troopers. Then there was that famous episode in the Book of Boba Fett where Boba dons his traditional Mandalorian mech armor… 🙄.

I have enjoyed building the odd mech… but they tend to be large, detailed builds with interesting techniques. Small mechs do not interest me. I can’t say that I do not buy them, because I have acquired the odd set on liquidation for a Minifigure or two. But, in most cases, I do not like these sets. The LEGO® Group seems hellbent on pumping out mechs for characters that have never even used one. Case in point: Darth Vader. A mech suit is so out of character for Darth Vader that it isn’t even funny. He is supposed to be a badass force-wielder. He doesn’t need a mech for anything. The only mech that makes any sense to me in this wave is the Stormtrooper. I could see a few grunts armed with these on the battlefield… though to my knowledge there are no Stormtrooper mechs in Star Wars canon…

The Star Wars theme already offers microfighters as a means to get Minifigures without buying large sets. For me, the only reason to buy a mech set is for the Minifigure, or in rare cases where the character actually uses a mech (like Quaritch in Avatar). Star Wars mechs are entirely pointless in my opinion. With all the great Star Wars stories that exist, why waste time with mech sets that don’t even exist in Star Wars canon? That’s just my two cents. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below or reach out on social media.

Until next time,

-Tom
