LEGO® Sonic the Hedgehog Theme Revealed

LEGO® Sonic the the Hedgehog is back, and this time with his own theme! Let me begin by saying this is how the Super Mario theme should have been. The LEGO® Group revealed four new sets and each contains recognizable environments from the games, and MINIFIGURES. Other than Mighty Bowser, I have yet to buy any Super Mario sets. I made an exception for Bowser because of the amazing build techniques. However, the lack of proper minifigs has kept me away from the theme in general. While I am not much of a gamer anymore, I played Sonic the Hedgehog on my SEGA Genesis back in the day. Consequently, I am tempted by this theme because the Minifigures hold nostalgic value.

With the brand new ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ product range from the LEGO® Group, Sonic fans can build, create and play as Sonic, Tails, Amy and Dr. Eggman in beloved levels including Sonic’s Speed Sphere, Tails’s Workshop and Tornado Plane, Amy’s Animal Rescue Island and the iconic Green Hill Zone. The LEGO® Sonic product range will be available at authorized retailers starting in August 2023.

The LEGO® Sonic the Hedgehog collaboration features four sets of different sizes and complexity with modular elements inviting Sonic fans to build high-velocity obstacles for Sonic to blast through as he battles the Badniks and rescues his friends. Sonic fans can      get creative, construct their own unique courses, combine sets and invent new storylines, or reminisce their treasured memories as they challenge the beloved hedgehog to be the hero of the day.

Of course, this is not Sonic’s first foray into a brick-built LEGO® world. LEGO® Ideas released the Greenhill Zone in 2022, and the Minifigure came in a Dimensions level pack back in 2016. However, I am sure fans of the franchise are thrilled to see more characters from the game added to the minifig roster. My only complaint at this point is that Tails comes with stumpy, unmoving legs. What is up with that? This character is supposed to run! Otherwise, the theme makes use of the ramp elements seen commonly in the City Stuntz line, along with new elements like Sonic’s Speed Sphere.

Interestingly, if you paid close attention, you noticed that set #76993 is missing from the batch. Obviously, this could mean a set was dropped from the theme. However, it can also mean that the LEGO® Group has more announcements coming for the Sonic theme. I’m a little disappointed with the low minifig counts in these sets. However, a tradeoff was probably made with large and new parts in order to keep the cost of the sets decent. What do you think of the new theme? Do you like this approach more than the Super Mario Bros theme? Let me know in the comments below or reach out on social media.

Until next time,

-Tom
