“M” is for Memoirs of a Geisha

M

Today marks the half way point in the A-to-Z Challenge. I can’t believe how fast it is flying by! I have been preparing for it since last fall, and now it feels like I blinked and it is half done. But, I digress. For today’s letter “M” post, I recreated the Memoirs of a Geisha poster out of LEGO. This movie has never ranked among my personal favorites, but I have seen it many times because it is one of my wife’s all time favorite movies. Whenever she can’t sleep, this is one of her go-to, comfort movies. I have woken up many times in the pre-dawn hours to find my wife huddled under a blanket in the TV room with this movie playing. So, today’s LEGO-fied poster is for my wifey, who more than tolerates my silly LEGO obsession.

I think part of the reason that my wife likes Memoirs of a Geisha so much is because Japan holds a special place in her heart. She went on a trip to Japan after finishing her undergrad. Having been to Japan myself (though at a different time from my wife), the movie does bring back some memories of the culture and places. For me, Japan was the first major travel that I did without my parents. I went to compete in a martial arts tournament during my senior year of high school. I visited Yanagawa (where the tournament was held), Kyoto, and Tokyo on that trip. Yanagawa was very traditional, Kyoto had a neat mix of traditional and modern, and Tokyo was very modern. I have to say that Kyoto was probably my favorite.

For my LEGO-fied poster, I used the Kimono Girl Minifigure from series 4. The rest of the Minifigures featured were all created using varied pieces from my collection. I built the little scene at the bottom of the poster simply using stacks of 1×2 bricks.

As always, I welcome your thought on Memoirs of a Geisha, or your experience in Japan. This post was made as part of the April A-to-Z Blogging Challenge, you can click here to visit the official site for more information.

Until next time,

-Tom

  1. Hello fellow A-to-Zer! Also, what fun! I love the idea of Lego-fying posters. And this one is especially impressive-looking. Good work!
