“D” is for Deep Blue Sea

It is Day 4 of the April A-to-Z blogging challenge, and for the letter D, I have chosen to LEGO-fy the Deep Blue Sea movie poster. Deep Blue Sea was released in theatres on July 28, 1999. I had just graduated from high school about a month before that, and was cruising around town in my first car, a Pontiac Sunfire. I actually saw this movie on a date. I remember feeling on top of the world that summer. High school (which I hated) was behind me, and I was moving on to bigger and better things in college. Deep Blue Sea is one of the movies that I remember the most from that summer. I thought it was pretty awesome, but I have always had a thing for sharks. They fascinate me and terrify me at the same time. Sadly, there are not many good shark movies out there.

This LEGO-fied poster was made using the generic LEGO shark figurine that comes with many water-themed sets. For the Minifigure representation of Saffron Burrows’ character, Susan, I used a fairly common brown hairpiece that has come with many Minifigures in the City and Creator themes. The face is one that I picked up in the make-a-Minifigure station at the LEGO store. Her torso is from the Jewel Thief that was part of Minifigures Series 15. She actually has no legs in this shot. I placed the torso upright in a translucent blue Rubbermaid lid, and added a thin layer of water into it. The lid was propped up by some LEGO bricks so that I could fit a small flashlight underneath. That allowed me to illuminate the whole thing from below. The shark was photographed in the same way, and the whole thing was Photoshopped together.
