And the April A-to-Z blogging challenge begins anew (click here to visit the official website to learn more). This is my second year taking part in the challenge. This year, my theme is LEGO-fied. I will be taking pop-culture art (movie posters, album covers and such) that have meant something to me over the years, and recreating them with LEGO!
Today, “A” is for Armageddon. Armageddon was a movie that was released in 1998. It was one of two asteroid disaster movies to hit theaters that year (the other being Deep Impact). Armageddon was the better of the two in my opinion. I particularly remember Armageddon because it was the last movie I ever went to see on my little motor-scooter. Growing up, we lived in a suburban area that bordered on rural. There was no public transportation. So, when I was old enough, I got a license to drive small motorized vehicles, and would zip around on my little scooter. It took me about 20 minutes to drive to the nearest movie theater. In the summer of 1998, I already had my learner’s permit for a car, but I still drove my scooter to get around on my own without my parents. I got hit by a car on my scooter not too long after seeing Armageddon though. I was lucky, and was only on crutches for a couple of weeks (though the asphalt burn lasted for years). The scooter was totaled though, and written off by insurance. And so ended my scooting.
In any case, I loved Armageddon back in the day. I was especially thrilled that my favorite band, Aerosmith, had four songs on the soundtrack. Two of those songs were brand new singles, and I went to see the movie initially just to hear those songs. You have to keep in mind that digital downloads and YouTube did not exist in those days. The only way to hear a new song was on Musique Plus (the French version of Much Music, which was the Canadian version of MTV), the radio, or by buying the album. I couldn’t easily get to the record store on my scooter, so the easiest way to hear the songs was to see the movie. Aerosmith’s first number one single, I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, was one of those singles. My wife and I used that one as our wedding dance tune. But, more on Aerosmith in a later post.
This LEGO-fied poster was created using a random assortment of Minifigures from my Minifigure bin. In the foreground you have the shuttle and boosters from LEGO set 60080, the Spaceport. I remember thinking that the cheesy factor for Armageddon was right up there with Independence Day. So cheesy, but so good that I will eat those crackers:) I love your Lego-fied poster. I’m the one person who has never seen the movie.
Gosh, it was so hard to be a teenager and not have the tools today’s kids have: no YouTube, no Shazam, no iPod, no nothing! We had to hum a song to a more knowledgable person in order to find out what it was called. Then we had to wait till the weekend so we’d be able to listen to the charts where it was going to be played!
Love that you and your wife had the Aerosmith song for your wedding!

“Armageddon” I remember when that came out. It was a good movie, and a hit if I remember correctly. I had forgotten about the song, it was more popular than the movie. Great post!

So another A to Z… I have been remiss in my posting and reading all year but it’s Easter and April Fools… So Either I’m back and going to be doing A to Z kind of like a blogging rebirth… Or Its a trick and April Fools. Hard to say but As always I DO Love Legos and I’m going to color more this year if you put those up too… just dug my crayons out.
No worries there, the weekly colouring pages will continue! I already have the next few weeks lined up!
