Review – Road Worker [30357]

Just a little review this week. I picked up the LEGO Road Worker polybag (set 30357) at Walmart recently. I first saw this set back in January, which leads me to believe that it came out with the first wave of sets this year. I picked it up because of the roadwork sign. The roadwork crew could certainly use one in my LEGO city.

VALUE: 90%
At $5.99 with a piece count of 58, this set will cost you $0.10 per brick. That is a really good value. The average for last year was $0.13 per brick (click here to read my review of last year’s LEGO catalogs). I give the Road Worker 4.5/5 (90%) for value.

BUILD: 100%
This is a nice little build. I am really happy that the actual roadwork sign is a printed tile and not a sticker. It is built in such a way that the sign can fold up and down, as well as rotate, so it doesn’t always have to face the rear of the little buggy. There isn’t really anything that I don’t like about this set, so it gets 10/10 for build.

MINIFIGURES: 84%
As the name suggests, you get a generic road worker Minifigure with this set. He comes with a red hardhat, and a simple smiley face. He does not have a double-side face. This Minifigure has no back or leg printing, but he does have printing on the front of his torso. He comes with a walkie talkie and traffic-directing paddle as accessories. He earns 10/15 (67%) as a design score. On the plus side, the brick-to-Minifigure ratio is 58:1, which earns a full 5/5. Averaging the ratio and design scores gives this set an overall Minifigure score of 84%.

ENTERTAINMENT: 70%
This set took me seven minutes to build, meaning that each minute of build time cost me $0.86. That is not a great build time value, and earns 2/5 (40%). But, I do like this set, and I will keep it built exactly as it is in my city. So, for my enjoyment of it, it earns 100%. Averaging the build time value and enjoyment scores gives this set a total entertainment rating of 70%.

Overall: 86%

If you are trying to fill out your LEGO city road work crew, this set is a really good buy. You get a very good value per brick, a nice warning sign, and an excellent brick to fig ratio. The only real drawbacks to this set are the lack of build time (which is to be expected with a polybag), and a fairly generic Minifigure. A little more printing would have made this fig nicer. I still recommend this set though. It is a cheap way to get a nice sign, and a road worker.
