Ghost
The apparition of a dead person believed to appear or become manifest to the living, typically as a nebulous image.
My LEGO city is haunted. So much so that I have to have two dedicated teams of Ghostbusters on call (the original and 2016 variants). LEGO produced its first ghost Minifigure in 1990. It was the typical bedsheet variety ghost, and it was released in set 6081, the King’s Mountain Fortress. It consisted of a new shroud mould that covered a black headpiece, white torso, and white bricks in place of legs. The ghost got a little update in 1997, when it received actual Minifigure legs to go under the shroud. This ghost also appeared with an updated facial expression in 2012’s Monster Fighters theme. Since then, their ghosts have become a little more nebulous (can you tell that I like that word?). The ghosts you see in this article are from Minifigures series 13, and the Ghostbusters theme.
Ghosts are one of my favorite topics. I am always in the mood for a good ghost movie. They are also one of the paranormal occurrences that I am not 100% sure that I believe in, but am not ready to completely discount. I am sure that a lot of haunting stories out there are fabricated. But, at the same time, the sheer number of them make me think that somewhere there has to be some truth as well.
On my last trip to New York City, my wife and I stayed in a potentially haunted airbnb. The landlord informed us that the tenants directly below us were continually complaining about strange whispers, objects being thrown across the room, and the apparition of a little girl. Naturally, I found this intriguing. To make the story even more interesting, the building was next to one of the oldest graveyards in the area. While I do not know the history of the area, it looks like the graveyard could have been partially excavated to develop the buildings around it. The parking lot of the building we stayed in was actually at the level of the graves next door. A brick wall basically held the earth of the graveyard from flowing into the parking lot.
In any case, my wife woke up numerous times over the three nights that we were there because she heard what sounded like footsteps on the wooden floor in the living room. The skeptic in me thinks it was just the normal sounds of a really old building, but my wife is adamant that it was footsteps and not creaking old building sounds.
Then there was the strange case of the screw. Prior to our arrival, some paintings had been put up on the walls of the living room. So, some screws had naturally been in use. The first morning we woke up there, I found one of those screws on the floor in the bedroom, right next to my bags. I had walked past that point numerous times the night before and had not seen or stepped on any screws. I asked the landlord about the screw just for fun, and he said that he had not used any screws in the bedroom before our arrival, only in the living room. He said the screw that I found was the same type he had been using in the living room. I placed the screw on the living room table. The next morning when I woke up, the same screw was once again on the same spot on the floor right next to my bags. My wife assures me that she did not move the screw, and the landlord assured me he did not enter the apartment. I saw no nebulous images during our stay, but I did have a strange, recurring dream about a girl dying while we were there. That could be just because I had ghosts on my mind before going to bed. But, the screw? The footsteps my wife heard?

I’m 100% sure that I don’t believe in ghosts. But it is nice that you have the Ghostbusters in your LEGO city. Maybe the rest of the figures believe in ghosts!

Nebulous is a great word. And my daughter would not have even stayed at that airbnb if she so much as heard the idea of the place being haunted so kudos to you and your wife for making that work.
My friend thinks her sister’s house is haunted. I believe her.
Man, this was a cool post. First, LEGO. I had no idea there was awesomeness in the ghost realm. Speaking of which – I definitely believe. I’ve definitely heard things. I’ve even talked to them, but never communicated. Does that sound crazy? If I write any more, it will be a post!

Love the banshee, the specter, and Slimer. That is a spooky story about the screw. Are you sure your wife wasn’t screwing with you? Sorry, I couldn’t help myself on that one. I love ghost stories as well.

Spooky! I always wonder if ghostly experiences are the result of some energy sources or psychological phenomena we don’t understand yet.
From a scientific standpoint, certain hauntings have been explained by the presence of sound waves that are below the range that the human ear can pick up. These waves can cause internal organs to vibrate ever so slightly, which can cause many of the typical symptoms of haunting like chills, spine-tingling, the feeling you are being touched, etc. But, that theory can’t explain all hauntings…
Yeah, I’ve also heard of carbon monoxide poisoning causing hallucinations that are similar to hauntings. Still spooky.
Those are some impressive Lego ghosts! Who knew there were so many figures?

As an archaeologist, I always had an ambivalent relationship with ghosts. On the one hand, they creep me out – on the other hand, I’d love to ask them questions 😀

I love the Slimer figurine! I didn’t know they had Ghostbuster Lego – very cool.
I stayed in a haunted B&B once – fortunately I didn’t know that until I read the “guest comments” book in the room before my last night. But nothing did happen – hurray (or darn).
I remember having a ghost with a castle kit as a kid, so it might have been that first instance of them, as it would have been around that time (1990). Something about the look of the ghosts always made me chuckle. I’m a firm believer that we can’t rule anything out unless we can definitively prove it doesn’t exist – and that’s hard to do. Intriguing to read about your hotel experience.
